Guyana & jenipapo • Love, paint, solar eclipses
❂ I N "T H E VE N T R I L O Q U I S T ' S T A L E" I followed the Wapishana tribe's stories up&down the river Essequibo, in those deep green rainforests and hot savannas of Guyana... and the myth of the solar eclipse connected to a legend... and I read about a black bodypaint, the jenipapo. — a book written by Guyanese Pauline Melville, titled "Solar eclipse in Guyana" in Hungarian.
T O T A L E C L I P S E S The novel plays in the beginning of the century and weaves the 1919 solar eclipse into the story. According to indigenous believes, evil creatures and monsters emerge from the wilderness, therefore the people try to scare them away from their homes, as well as the Sun from the Moon, by shouting and making loud noise. Back in 1999 we could observe the total eclipse from Hungary excellently and beyond the extraordinary there was something gruesome about it, as the novel also pictures it. We watched from the Bakony mountains, above Ganna village as the sky turned dark, the insects disappeared, birds and wild animals in the forest and domestic animals down in the village all of a sudden subside into silence during long minutes, the air cools down... In those few minutes it came clear to me how much our planet's nature's order is depending daily on this only Celestial. I want to travel to the green continent long ago and, in the next years, there will be good opportunity to witness 2 total eclipses... 2 July 2019, Chile/Argentina and 14 December 2020, Chile/Argentina.
T H E L E G E N D According to the Wapishana version, the brother secretly visits her sister at night. The girl likes the secret visits although she doesn't know who is her misterious visitor. One day she decides to stain his face with magical jenipapo paint, to identify him. Being discovered, he feels ashamed and climbes up to the sky, becoming the Moon (which has dark stains on the face) and her sister becomes the Sun. Both, Sun and Moon chase each other day and night, they hardly meet unless there is an eclipse, and this is when they embrace.*

The Tupinambá verson says, it is the sister who seduces the poisoned brother and she paints his face with jenipapo to leave it more beautiful. When the boy notices what happened, he escapes and starts launching arrows to the sky, one into the other, building a ladder of arrows. He climbes to the sky on this ladder and he becomes the Moon and his sister follows him and she becomes the Vesper. On the earth they leave an offspring who never receives a name.**

❂ A "N A P F O G Y A T K O Z Á S G U Y A N Á B A N" közben végigkövettem a vapisiana törzs történeteit fel-le az Essequibo folyón, Guyana mélységesen zöld esőerdeiben és napperzselte szavannáin... a mítoszt, mely szerint a napfogyatkozás egy legendával kapcsolódik össze... és olvastam egy fekete testfestékről, a dzsenipapóról. — Regény a guyanai születésű Pauline Melville tollából.
N A P F O G Y A T K O Z Á S O K A regény a század elején játszódik, és a történetbe beleszövődik az 1919-es napfogyatkozás is. A benszülött legendák mentén ilyenkor gonosz lények és ártó szörnyek jönnek elő a vadonból, ezért az emberek hangzavarral, kiáltozással, zsivajjal, csörömpöléssel igyekeznek elriasztani azokat az otthonuktól, egyben a Holdat a Naptól. Annak idején 1999-ben kitűnően láthattuk a napfogyatkozást Magyarországon és rendkívüliségén túl volt benne valami hátborzongató, ami itt a regényben is megjelenik. A Bakonyból, a Ganna fölötti dombokról figyeltük, ahogy az ég egyszerre elsötétül, a rovarok eltűnnek, a madarak, vadak az erdőben és a házi állatok lenn a faluban hirtelen hosszú percekre elhallgatnak, a levegő lehűl... Abban a pár percben megtapasztaltam, mekkora mértékben függ ettől az egyetlen égitesttől függ a természet s az élet rendje nap mint nap. Régóta vágyódom a zöld kontinensre, és a következő években jó alkalom adódhat két teljes napfogyatkozás megfigyelésére is... 2019. július 2-án Chile/Argentína és 2020. december 14-én szintén Chile/Argentína területén.

A L E G E N D A A vapisiana változat szerint a fivér éjjelente titokban látogatja a húgát. A lánynak tetszenek a titkos találkák, bár nem tudja, hogy ki a titokzatos látogatója. Egy nap eldönti, hogy befesti szeretője arcát dzsenipapóval, hogy azonosíthassa. Amikor felfedezik, a fiú elszégyeli magát és felmászik az égre, ő lesz a Hold (arcán a sötét foltokkal) és a húga lesz a Nap. A Nap és a Hold éjjel-nappal futnak egymás után, de aligha találkoznak, napfogyatkozás alkalmával történik csak, ekkor ők ölelkeznek.*
A tupinambá változat azt mondja, hogy a lány volt az, aki elcsábítja elkábított fivérét és arcát befesti dzsenipapóval, hogy az még szebb legyen. Amikor a fiú észreveszi, hogy mi történt, szégyenében elmenekül és nyilakat kezd lőni az égre, egyiket a másik után, egy nyíllétrát építve. Ezen a létrán felmászik az égre, és ő lesz a Hold, majd a húga utánamászik és ő lesz az Esthajnalcsillag. A földön hátrahagynak egy gyermeket, aki sosem kap nevet.**

Um dia, ela decide manchar seu rosto com tintura de jenipapo mágico, para identificá-lo. Ao ser descoberto, ele se sente envergonhado e sobe ao céu, transformando-se na lua (que tem manchas escuras na face) e a irmã se transforma no sol. **...outra versão do mito do incesto de acordo com a crença dos tupinambás. Há uma inversão nesta última, pois desta vez é a irmã quem seduz o irmão envenenado. Pinta seu rosto com jenipapo para deixá-lo mais belo, mas ao se dar conta do ocorrido, o irmão foge e começa a lançar flechas para o céu, até construir uma escada de flechas. Sobre nesta escada e se torna a lua e a irmã, segue-o e se transforma na estrela Vésper.
